The competition in the smartphone market is so intense right now that any manufacturer that wants to dominate the market or improve or maintain its share must find a way to set its devices apart. For instance, if operating system was all that mattered, you would have gone for the budget ZTE V3 Youth instead of the Samsung flagship Galaxy S6 Edge. Leading companies, such as Samsung, know they need to continue to innovate to maintain their position. The Smart Glow notification feature on the 2016 edition of Galaxy J2 is one of such innovation, however minute, that Samsung hopes will help it remain relevant in the market.

Samsung Galaxy J2 2016

Design and Display

Samsung Galaxy J2 parades a clean and appealing design which features nice curves. After all, it belongs to the Galaxy series which boasts many attractive devices. This should be a joy to hold in your hand. It has a decently svelte profile at 8 millimetres, but this is definitely not the slimmest of phones around. The available colours which you can choose from are black, white and gold. The device sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. You can expect impressive viewing experience on this one.

Smart Glow

The headline feature of the Galaxy J2 is its Smart Glow notification system. The smartphone is the first from Samsung to use this. What the feature does is to allow you add colour to alerts for your contacts, apps or phone usage. You can use the innovative LED-light notification feature for three usage circumstances, namely: Selfie Assist, Usage alerts and Priority alerts. Essentially, you can have an idea of what is happening on your phone whenever you get an alert without necessarily viewing the display.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) packs an 8MP rear and 5MP selfie camera combo. The setup may not be the best in the midrange segment, at least in terms of resolution, but this is a device from Samsung. You should expect to take great shots with this device. The Selfie Assist aspect of Smart Glow notification system lets you capture quality framed selfies with the rear camera. The LED ring of the Smart Glow shines brightly and your selfie is automatically captured when the system detects proper face alignment.

Hardware and Storage

Powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, the Galaxy J2 looks to deliver decent performance. The chip is married to 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage capacity. Users will be able to extend storage space further – by up to 128 GB – using a microSD card. The phone boots Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. This software is the best for now, at least while we wait for the official release of Android 7.0 Nougat. The user interface has been refreshed with several interesting features added.

Sundry Features

Samsung Galaxy J2 comes with several other interesting features. Among these is the new Turbo Speed technology which, as its name indicates, boosts the speed or responsiveness of the smartphone. It is claimed that the feature enables the device load applications up to 40 percent quicker than regular devices with twice the RAM capacity. The phone also has an S Bike mode and Ultra Data Saving among other Galaxy J series devices.

Power is supplied to the Samsung Galaxy J2 by a 2,600mAh battery which promises decent runtime. It supports 4G LTE (Cat. 4) connectivity for theoretical download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. You also get other regular connectivity options. The phone offers dual-SIM support.

Pricing and Availability

Samsung Galaxy J2 is available in India, starting from July 10. As usual, we cannot tell for now when and if the smartphone will be launched in Nigeria. It is priced at INR 9,750 in the Asian country. You are looking at a price in the range N40,000-N55,000 to get a unit.

As is its usual practise, Samsung has unveiled the rugged variant of its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy S7. The new S7 Active is built for those who want to work or engage in activities without having to worry about their smartphone getting damaged. It is designed to deliver awesome battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Active

AT&T

Design

It is clear from the look of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active that it is not manufactured to appeal to the flashy. Its Korean maker has done away with the classy glass-and-metal design of the Galaxy S7 here. The phone instead sports a military-grade, plastic body pointing at a device built to take serious beating. It is protected on the front by sturdy, scratch-resistant glass which will supposedly not shatter or break when you drop the Galaxy S7 Active from a height of 5 feet. It boasts an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. You are not expected to have issues with the device even when you immerse it in up to 5-feet deep water for half an hour.

Display and Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active sports an amazing 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a Quad HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels. Expect super-sharp images with a very high pixel density of about 576 pixels per inch. On the camera front, it comes with a combo of 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel selfie cameras. This produces similar image quality as the original S7. You get Dual Pixel technology and 4K video recording capability in the package.

Hardware and Software

The Galaxy S7 Active does not look as attractive as the main Galaxy S7, but it does not mean that performance has been sacrificed as well. It is powered by the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU which is supported by ample 4 GB of RAM. The smartphone will be available in 32GB and 64GB variants. Onboard storage is expandable up to 200 GB using a microSD card. As would be expected, the high-end device boots Android 6.0 Marshmallow software.

Other Features

A major talking point about the Samsung Galaxy S7 Active is the colossal 4,000mAh battery that it comes with. That juicer offers at least 400mAh extra capacity than both the original Galaxy S7 and its Edge variant. It is expected to deliver 36 hours of talk time and can reportedly be topped up in under two hours.

The smartphone has a fingerprint nestled in its Home button. The Active Key is available on the side to enable you launch apps more easily. The Galaxy S7 Active has a Knox security feature for an extra layer of protection.

Pricing and Availability

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Active will be sold by AT&T and those interested can get it via the American company’s online store. It will be offered on a monthly contract basis. The lump-sum payment comes to about $795, which is around $100 higher than what you pay for the regular Samsung Galaxy S7. You are looking at a price around N280,000 to lay your hands on a unit of the device.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Active at a Glance

– Rugged construction
– IP68-certified
– 5.1” Quad HD Super AMOLED display
– 12MP rear and 5MP front cameras
– Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 CPU
– 4GB RAM
– 32GB/64GB expandable storage

As its name indicates, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) is the 2016 refresh of the Galaxy A5 that was launched back in November 2014. It is targeted at young and trendy users with its chic design. The phone comes with a slightly bigger Super AMOLED display and is equipped for more convincing performance.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)

GSMArena

Design and Display

The Galaxy A5 (2016) shares some design cues with the flagship Galaxy S6 Edge, which means it looks more premium than its predecessor. It flaunts a solid metal construction. The phone is protected on both front and back by sturdy Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It has similar rounded edges as the high-end Edge smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) sports a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display having a Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels for superb viewing. It has very thin bezels. Content viewing should be pure bliss on this device.

Camera

In the terms of image capturing, the new smartphone comes fitted with a robust 13-megapixel sensor on the rear. The shooter has a wide f/1.9 aperture and boasts optical image stabilisation (OIS) feature. Expect this unit to serve up some awesome images. Turn the Galaxy A5 (2016) around and you are confronted with a 5-megapixel camera having an f/1.9 aperture size like the rear snapper. This selfie taker promises great shots, even in poorly-lit areas.

Hardware and Software

The Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) is not a flagship smartphone so it is unrealistic to expect it to deliver flagship performance like that of the Galaxy S6 Edge. The similarity between the two ends with the looks. Under the hood, this upper midrange smartphone features an octa-core Samsung Exynos 7580 SoC. The CPU has its speed clocked at 1.6 GHz and is helped on by decent 2 GB of RAM. Onboard storage capacity is 16 GB, with this being expandable by up to 128 GB via a dedicated microSD card slot. The Galaxy A5 (2016) boots Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system with Samsung’s TouchWiz skin laid on top.

Sundry Features

The phone has a fingerprint sensor integrated into its Home button, just as you find it on higher-end offerings from its Korean maker. That is an extra layer of protection for your sensitive information. Juice is supplied by a 2,900mAh battery with fast charging support and an Ultra Power Saving mode. The dual-SIM Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) features 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.1, USB OTG, NFC and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.

Pricing and Availability

It is not clear whether the Galaxy A5 (2016) is currently available in Nigeria. In India, it retails around a price equivalent to about N85,000-N110,000. You may be forgiven to think better deals can be had at that price these days.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) at a Glance

– Metal and glass body
– 5.2″ Full HD Super AMOLED display
– 13MP OIS rear and 5MP front cameras
– 1.6GHz, octa-core processor
– 2GB RAM
– 16GB onboard storage; 128GB expandable

These days, Samsung is known more for its high-end offerings such the Galaxy S6 (including its Edge variant) and Galaxy Note 5. The recently-unveiled Samsung Galaxy View is an Android-powered tablet that wants to double as a TV you can carry around. Featuring an elegant, portable design, the slate crams in a (literally) humongous Full HD display and is fired on by a powerful octa-core processor.

Samsung_Galaxy_View

Build and Display

Samsung Galaxy View is a beast! The new Microsoft Surface Pro 4 definitely has nothing on this one in terms of size. With a dimension of 451.8 x 275.8 x 11.9 millimetres and a weight of 2.65 kg, the tablet is best used at home – its maker hints that it is designed for home entertainment anyway. It crams in a massive 18.4-inch diagonal display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. But with a measly pixel density of just about 120 pixels per inch, this device falls more in the TV class than that of tablets. The Galaxy View has a kickstand on the rear which helps to keep it in upright position and also doubles as a handle for carry it from place to place.

Power and Performance

A Samsung Exynos 7580 octa-core processor takes care of business under the hood. The CPU is paired with 2GB RAM and delivers speeds of up to 1.6 GHz. Samsung Galaxy View boots Android 5.1 Lollipop software with an easy-to-use user interface. Power is supplied by a 5,700mAh Lithium-Ion battery rated to be capable of supporting up to eight hours of use.

Sundry Information

Buyers get a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera with an f/2.2 lens for selfies and video calling. Samsung Galaxy View can be used to record and watch Full HD (1080p) videos. Onboard storage is either 32 GB or 64 GB with support for microSD storage expansion. The slate’s home screen is customised with TV and video apps such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. And talking about the screen, it allows you to use apps side-by-side – that is no surprise really given its humongous size.

For really immersive experience when watching movies, listening to music of playing games, the Galaxy View packs a pair of 4W speakers. It features a Nano SIM card slot, Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4G + 5GHz with Wi-Fi Direct support.

Pricing and Availability

Samsung Galaxy View is expected to go on sale in the United States from November 6. According to CNET it will sell for $599 (which converts to a price of about N120,000 in Nigeria). Its Korean maker has yet to reveal information on international pricing and availability at this time.

HIGHLIGHTS

– 18.4-inch Full HD display
– 2.1MP front-facing camera
– 1.6GHz octa-core MediaTek processor
– 2GB RAM
– 32GB/64GB onboard storage
– Android 5.1 Lollipop

The much-awaited Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is finally here and the wait appears to be well worth it. The gigantic handset shows off a solid, premium construction and boasts specifications comparable to the Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant, even better. It is also available in a dual-SIM model.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Image: Samsung

Design and Display

The Galaxy Note 5 parades a sleek metal chassis fitting of a premium phone like it. Looking at the device you may see nothing but a larger Samsung Galaxy S6, with which it shares many things in common. Like the flagship smartphone, Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is protected by rugged Corning Gorilla Glass 4. It flaunts a slim profile like the Galaxy S6, but not as slim as the other device at a thickness of 7.6 millimetres. The handset packs a massive 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a stunning Quad-HD resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. That amazing display boasts an awesome 518 pixels per inch offering users breathtaking clarity. You get an S Pen stylus with the Galaxy Note 5 as well.

Camera

Samsung provides this phablet with similar camera sensors as its current flagship phone, the S6. On the rear of Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a 16-megapixel shooter with LED flash, autofocus and optical image stabilisation as well as several other useful pictures such as face and smile detection, HDR and Dual Shot. The camera has up to 2K (2160p) video recording capability. It supports simultaneous HD video and image recording. Your selfie needs are taken care of by an impressive 5-megapixel snapper.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Camera

Image: Samsung

Performance and OS

Users should expect nothing but jaw-dropping performance from Samsung Galaxy Note 5 being equipped with the same octa-core Exynos 7420 processor found on the Galaxy S6. The heavy-duty processor, which has four cores pacing along at 1.5 GHz and another four at 2.1 GHz, is backed up in its heavy lifting by a very generous 4 GB of RAM – more than available on Samsung Galaxy S6. A Mali-T760 MP8 GPU chews through graphics. Operating platform is provided by Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which is covered with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.

Additional Information

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128 GB storage versions. It also has a dual-SIM variant. Unfortunately, none of the models on which information is available for now has a microSD card slot for storage memory expansion. The phablet supports 4G LTE connectivity, which is to be expected particularly given its high price. Connectivity features include Bluetooth 4.2 with A2DP, EDR and LE; microUSB 2.0, NFC, 3G and dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot. A non-removable Li-Polymer battery with 3000mAh capacity powers the phablet.

Pricing and Availability

It has been announced that Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will be available in the U.S. from August 21, but availability in other markets isn’t known yet. It is expected to retail for about $700 to $800, depending on onboard storage capacity. At that rate, you should expect to pay a price in the range N135,000 to N160,000 in Nigeria to get your hand on one.

HIGHLIGHTS

– 5.7-inch Quad-HD Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass 4
– 16-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel selfie camera
– Samsung Exynos 7420 octa-core processor
– 4GB RAM
– Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

The Galaxy Core Prime is one of the more affordable smartphones from Samsung, apparently targeted at entry-level Android phone users. The dual-SIM device shows off an elegant frame and features a large battery, a quad-core processor and Android 4.4 KitKat. It is available in 3G and 4G models.

Design

As you would expect of a device from its maker, the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime flaunts an attractive look. It is elegantly designed with a durable, anodised metal-like frame and has a matte body. The affordable phone is also interestingly slim at a thickness of only 8.8 millimetres to make it fit nicely into your hand or pocket. The phone does not weigh too much as well at 130 grams.

There is equally a decent 2-megapixel front-facing shooter for taking selfies.

Hardware and OS

A quad-core processor, clocked at 1.2 GHz, powers the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime. The CPU is supported for multitasking and responsiveness by RAM of 1GB capacity. Storage memory on the phone is 8 GB and you can still add up to 64GB extra storage space using a microSD card. The Galaxy Core Prime runs on Android 4.4 KitKat software, which delivers the best features you could probably expect from an affordable smartphone.

Sundry Specs

The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime packs a powerful 2000mAh battery, which the Korean smartphone manufacturer says could support up to 13 hours of talk time on a 3G network and up to 60 hours of audio playback time. There is a power saving feature that helps you get the most out of your battery. The Galaxy Core Prime 4G model offers LTE category 4 connection capability with amazingly fast speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Connectivity options also include USB 2.0, GLONASS, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.

Pricing

The 3G variant of this phone sells for between $125 and $150 (highest price in Nigeria should around N30,000 based on these prices). The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime 4G will very likely be priced at a couple of thousands naira higher.
