Former smartphone super heavyweight Nokia has officially joined the Android bandwagon with Nokia 6, a mid-range device. Google’s software has become the one to beat in the mobile operating system space in recent years. It has since supplanted both Nokia’s Symbian OS and BlackBerry OS which used to reign supreme in the market years ago. BlackBerry had earlier joined the Android party with the likes of the Priv and DTEK50 and its former major rival has now followed suit. So what does Nokia 6 has to offer?

Design and Display

With the 6, it is easy to tell that Nokia, now owned by HMD Global, is still trying to test the waters as it works to re-launch itself into reckoning in the smartphone market. The device sports a chic 6000 series aluminium body – no way you can argue against the quality of material used here. HMD says the chassis was subjected to two different anodising processes. You have a device that not only looks durable, but appealing to the eye. The smartphone sports a 5.5-inch in-cell display with Full HD display. The 2.5D Gorilla Glass-protected screen is said to be designed for enjoyable reading in the sun.

Hardware and Software

The Nokia 6 will be powered by latest generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC. This is a decent processor for a device at this price point. The smartphone comes with an impressive 4 GB of RAM and generous 64 GB of onboard storage. Users should expect superior graphics performance, according to its Finnish maker. The configuration looks decent for enjoyable game and movie watching. Out of the box, the device will run on Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.

Other Features

A reliable 16-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, dual-tone flash, and phase detection autofocus is provided on the Nokia 6. This is accompanied by an 8-megapixel selfie snapper.

For enjoyable sound, the Nokia 6 comes with dual amplifiers and Dolby Atmos sound tech. The LTE-enabled, dual-SIM smartphone comes with a 3,000mAh non-removable battery.

Pricing and Availability

The price of the Nokia 6 is 1699 Chinese yuan, which converts to a price between N80,000 to N100,000 in Nigeria. If you think the phone offers decent value, another hurdle is that it will be available exclusively in China. It will be sold via the Chinese online retailer JD.

The competition in the smartphone market is so intense right now that any manufacturer that wants to dominate the market or improve or maintain its share must find a way to set its devices apart. For instance, if operating system was all that mattered, you would have gone for the budget ZTE V3 Youth instead of the Samsung flagship Galaxy S6 Edge. Leading companies, such as Samsung, know they need to continue to innovate to maintain their position. The Smart Glow notification feature on the 2016 edition of Galaxy J2 is one of such innovation, however minute, that Samsung hopes will help it remain relevant in the market.

Samsung Galaxy J2 2016

Design and Display

Samsung Galaxy J2 parades a clean and appealing design which features nice curves. After all, it belongs to the Galaxy series which boasts many attractive devices. This should be a joy to hold in your hand. It has a decently svelte profile at 8 millimetres, but this is definitely not the slimmest of phones around. The available colours which you can choose from are black, white and gold. The device sports a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. You can expect impressive viewing experience on this one.

Smart Glow

The headline feature of the Galaxy J2 is its Smart Glow notification system. The smartphone is the first from Samsung to use this. What the feature does is to allow you add colour to alerts for your contacts, apps or phone usage. You can use the innovative LED-light notification feature for three usage circumstances, namely: Selfie Assist, Usage alerts and Priority alerts. Essentially, you can have an idea of what is happening on your phone whenever you get an alert without necessarily viewing the display.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy J2 (2016) packs an 8MP rear and 5MP selfie camera combo. The setup may not be the best in the midrange segment, at least in terms of resolution, but this is a device from Samsung. You should expect to take great shots with this device. The Selfie Assist aspect of Smart Glow notification system lets you capture quality framed selfies with the rear camera. The LED ring of the Smart Glow shines brightly and your selfie is automatically captured when the system detects proper face alignment.

Hardware and Storage

Powered by a quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, the Galaxy J2 looks to deliver decent performance. The chip is married to 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage capacity. Users will be able to extend storage space further – by up to 128 GB – using a microSD card. The phone boots Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. This software is the best for now, at least while we wait for the official release of Android 7.0 Nougat. The user interface has been refreshed with several interesting features added.

Sundry Features

Samsung Galaxy J2 comes with several other interesting features. Among these is the new Turbo Speed technology which, as its name indicates, boosts the speed or responsiveness of the smartphone. It is claimed that the feature enables the device load applications up to 40 percent quicker than regular devices with twice the RAM capacity. The phone also has an S Bike mode and Ultra Data Saving among other Galaxy J series devices.

Power is supplied to the Samsung Galaxy J2 by a 2,600mAh battery which promises decent runtime. It supports 4G LTE (Cat. 4) connectivity for theoretical download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. You also get other regular connectivity options. The phone offers dual-SIM support.

Pricing and Availability

Samsung Galaxy J2 is available in India, starting from July 10. As usual, we cannot tell for now when and if the smartphone will be launched in Nigeria. It is priced at INR 9,750 in the Asian country. You are looking at a price in the range N40,000-N55,000 to get a unit.
