Xiaomi made a convincing statement about its repute of offering superb devices at amazing prices with its Redmi Note 3. That smartphone was a massive success with millions of units sold last year. The Chinese company has since launched a follow-up to that device in the aptly-named Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. What does this one have to offer?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

Design and Display

The design of this Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 successor is largely similar to the previous device. But the all-metal body is even now better. It took various steps to deliver the impressive aluminium look the device sports, according to Xiaomi. The Redmi Note 4 is slimmer at 8.4 millimetres and the rear is less slippery. For the display, it rocks a sharp 5.5-inch Full HD (1080p) display for quality images. The IPS touchscreen, which promises great wide-angle viewing, features a 2.5D glass that adds a curvy feel.

Camera

If you are an Instagram addict, you are not likely to be let down by what the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 brings to the table. On the rear is a 13-megapixel shooter with an f/2.0 lens, phase detection autofocus and dual-tone LED flash. This is capable of Full HD video recording. For your selfies, there is a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper also featuring an f/2.0 aperture lens. You can shoot HD (720p) videos with the secondary camera.

Performance and OS

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 4 hides an eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor which looks ready for serious business. There is also an option of a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 chipset. It is offered in three variants in terms of RAM and storage. RAM ranges from 2 GB to 4 GB and storage from 32 GB to 64 GB. It appears there is also a 16GB version. An Adreno 506 GPU crunches graphics on the device. It is safe to say you should expect great performance on the phablet. It runs Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 software, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Sundry Specs and Features

Users are in for super-fast mobile data download speeds with 4G LTE connectivity, which supports voice over LTE. Connectivity features also include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 and IR Blaster. There is a fingerprint scanner in the mix for added security. Its humongous 4,100mAh battery offers fast-charging tech for good measure.

Pricing and Availability

The sale of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has been on for a while. The starting price for the 2GB/32GB model is about $150. This is virtually the same price at which the comparable model of the Redmi Note 3 sold last year. But considering the current foreign exchange situation, you should now expect to pay at least about N70,000 to get a unit of this amazing device. And, of course, variants with greater memory and storage space attract higher prices.

The Redmi 4A is the most pocket-friendly among the affordable Redmi 4 series smartphones recently launched by Chinese phone maker Xiaomi. It offers a cheaper alternative to the Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime by making concessions in terms of power and performance. The phone also loses the fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi Redmi 4A

Design and Display

While coming in cheaper than the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and its Prime variant, the Redmi 4A boasts similar attractive look. It parades a metal body in gold or rose gold finish. The device comes in at 8.5mm thick and weighs about 132 grams – that is, both slimmer and lighter than the regular Redmi 4. It is also fitted with a 5-inch HD (720p) display for decent picture clarity.

Camera and Storage

Xiaomi equips the Redmi 4A with a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera, which is nestled at an angle at the top rear. It features a 5-lens system and phase-detection autofocus, but has single LED flash. The selfie snapper has a resolution of 5 megapixels and an f/2.2 aperture. You get generous inbuilt storage of 16 GB for keeping your photos and other stuffs. A microSD card with a capacity up to 128 GB is also supported for storage expansion.

Performance and OS

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A is set up to deliver less powerful performance compared to its more expensive brothers. It is kitted with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz. The Cortex-A53 CPU is paired with an Adreno 308 graphics solution and 2 GB of RAM. However, you get to enjoy Xiaomi’s MIUI 8 software, which is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS, here as well.

Sundry Features

Buyers get a 3,120mAh battery on the Redmi 4A, compared to the colossal 4,100mAh batteries on the Redmi 4 and Redmi 4 Prime. Fast charging is also supported, though. The phone also loses the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It features a hybrid dual-SIM slot, which could serve a SIM card or a microSD card. Connectivity features include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n.

Pricing and Availability

The Xiaomi Redmi 4A is friendly-priced at 499 yuan, whose equivalent should be somewhere in the region of N35,000 in Nigeria after conversion. Not bad for a metal-clad smartphone with Android 6.0 Marshmallow under the hood.

The recently-launched Xiaomi Redmi 4 is the latest addition to the budget-friendly Range of amazing smartphones. The Redmi 3 series successor is equipped for slightly-improved performance with a more powerful processor, while also packing a humongous battery and a fingerprint sensor onboard. It is also available in Redmi 4 Prime (or Pro) and Redmi 4A variants.

Xiaomi Redmi 4

Design and Display

Showing off similar metal body as its predecessor, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 features a unibody design which makes for snug handling. But it is both slightly thicker and heavier than the Redmi 3 at 8.9 millimetres and 156 kilograms respectively – you may not be able to tell the difference, though. It features similar 5-inch display with an HD resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels as its predecessor. The IPS touchscreen is covered with 2.5D glass, giving it a curvy touch. The phone will also be available in gold, silver and grey colour variants.

Camera and Storage

The Redmi 4 appears unchanged in the camera department, with a 13-megapixel rear unit married to a 5-megapixel front-facing snapper. But the primary shooter is of a different type despite similar resolution, according to GSMArena. Features include a 5-lens arrangement, phase-detection autofocus (PDAF) and dual LED flash. The selfie shooter has an f/2.2 aperture, same as the main camera. For storage, you get 16 GB onboard, expandable up to 128 GB via a microSD card slot.

Performance and OS

The phone retains an octa-core processor under the hood. But this is a more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 CPU clocked at a faster speed of 1.4 GHz. The chip is backed by RAM of 2 GB and an Adreno 505 GPU for enjoyable graphics and gaming. A newer Android version 6.0 Marshmallow powers the device, compared to the version 5.1 Lollipop on the Redmi 3. The OS is overlaid with a newer MIUI 8 skin.

Sundry Features

Juice will be supplied by the same 4,100mAh battery that came with the Redmi 3 series which also offers fast charging support. There is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor for added security. The Xiaomi Redmi 4 features hybrid dual-SIM card slots and supports super-fast 4G LTE connectivity. Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n are included among connectivity features.

Pricing and Availability

This smartphone is currently up for pre-order and is to start shipping from Monday Nov. 7. It is priced at 699 yuan, which converts to around N50,000 in Nigeria. Decent value, right?

Xiaomi is one phone manufacturer whose rise to prominence has been nothing short of impressive. It is known for delivering budget-friendly devices with amazing features. This has reportedly made it possible for the Chinese company to sell about 110 million devices across the globe in the past three years. Xiaomi’s Redmi range, which has no doubt contributed significantly in making this feat possible, has received two new interesting additions in forms of the Redmi 3S and its Prime variant.

These smartphones look set to excite some budget buyers with what they have to offer, scoring high in several respects. They are basically the same as the Xiaomi Redmi 3, safe for a different CPU and newer software, amongst a handful of changes.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S Prime

Mi

Design and Display

The Xiaomi Redmi 3S shows off somewhat premium design being crafted out of metal. It is built to fit nicely into your hands with a thickness that is about 10% lower than that of the Redmi 2. The smartphone tips the scale at a manageable 144 grams. It will be available in gold, silver and dark grey colours. On the front is a 5-megapixel IPS display with an HD resolution of 720 x 1,280 pixels.

Camera and Storage

For image capturing, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime are equipped with a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. This is arguably the best combo you can expect on a phone in their price segment. The main shooter boasts autofocus, face detection and Full HD (1,080p) video recording capability. You get 16 GB of onboard storage on the regular variant and 32 GB on the Prime model. Storage is expandable by up to 128 GB using a microSD card.

Performance and OS

These budget Xiaomi phones are driven by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor that is paired with an Adreno 505 GPU. This is a reliable configuration for enjoyable performance, although the CPU is clocked at just 1.1 GHz. RAM of 2GB capacity and 3GB capacity will be available on the Xiaomi Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime respectively. They boot Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system.

Sundry Specs and Features

A key selling point of the Redmi 3S devices is a humongous battery with a capacity of 4,100 mAh and rated to support up to two-day use on a charge. The Prime version also adds a fingerprint sensor for an extra layer of security. The phones support dual-SIM (Micro + Nano) functionality as well as 4G LTE connectivity. It should be noted that one of the two SIM slots doubles as a microSD card slot.

Pricing and Availability

At a price of Rs. 6,999 in India, there is no arguing Xiaomi Redmi 3S delivers good value. You should expect an amount in the range N30,000-N40,000 in Nigeria at that rate. The Redmi 3S Prime will set you back by an amount in the range N35,000-N46,000. GSMArena reports the first 90,000 units of the Prime made available were sold out in just eight minutes. The first sale of the regular Redmi 3S is scheduled for August 17, on which the higher-end model is also expected to be available again.

Xiaomi Redmi 3S at a Glance

– Metal body
– 5″ HD IPS display
– 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras
– 1.1GHz, octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 CPU
– 2GB/3GB RAM
– 16GB/32GB onboard storage
– 4,100mAh battery
– Optional fingerprint scanner
– 4G LTE

All beasts are not equal. We have seen so many colossal smartphones in recent times, but every now and then a more colossal offering comes along. This is the case with the Xiaomi Mi Max. This handset is one of a handful of handsets to breach the 6-inch threshold. It is targeted at those users who need a device that offer a mammoth display while also packing in ample juice.

Xiaomi Mi Max

Design and Display

In a market where most users prefer compact devices, Xiaomi somehow believes that there are those who would love to have a smartphone that is close to a tablet in size. The Mi Max is less than 0.6 inches away from a slate, in size, at 6.44 inches. It boasts solid construction with a metal body and Corning Gorilla Glass 3. You need not worry much about smudges and scratches on the handset. It is quite thin at only 7.5 millimetres, while tipping the scales at about 203 grams with its massive battery included. The screen boasts Full HD (1,080p) resolution and a pixel density around 342 ppi for brilliant colours and enjoyable content viewing. You should also expect this one to deliver pleasurable reading.

Camera and Storage

The Xiaomi Mi Max offers decent camera combo that should enable users take share-worthy shots. On the rear is a 16-megapixel with phase detection autofocus, dual-tone flash, and stunning 4K video recording capability. The 5-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture lens looks to serve up great selfies as well. The behemoth comes in three storage variants: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB. The internal storage is expandable using a microSD card.

Performance and OS

A Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 or Snapdragon 652 provides the muscles needed to get task done on the Mi Max – the choice of CPU depends on model. Both the 32GB and 64GB models of the plus-sized handset come with 3 GB of RAM, while the top-end 128GB variant has 4 GB of RAM. The device runs off Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system, which has Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 skin on the surface. The user interface is to be updated to the latest MIUI 8 offering extra protection to users.

Sundry Features

Another attraction-grabber on the Xiaomi Mi Max is its high-capacity 4,850mAh battery which certainly ensures you are able to use the device for long hours on a charge. The unit is expected to last for up to two days, depending on the sort of task you are using it for. There is Quick Charge support to enable you to top up the battery in a timely manner.

The 4G LTE-enabled Mi Max offers dual SIM card slots – one of these allow you use either a second SIM or a microSD card. It comes with a fingerprint scanner for extra protection.

Pricing and Availability

The base 32GB model of the Xiaomi Mi Max retails at 1,499 yuan in China. This means you should expect to spend more than N60,000 to get one of these in Nigeria. The top-end 128GB model will set you back by an amount in the range N85,000-N100,000. At this time, the device is only available in China and India. LeEco Le 2 is a follow-up to the hugely successful Le 1s (especially its Eco variant). Its maker appears interested in going head-to-head with fellow Chinese company Xiaomi, who holds the ace when it comes to affordable devices loaded with impressive features. This behemoth looks to rough it out with the amazing Redmi Note 3.

LeEco Le 2

BGR

Design and Display

Flaunting a unibody design and metallic construction, the 7.7mm-thick Le 2 no doubt looks premium. The build quality is impressive and one will not be wrong to say this will rival many higher-end smartphones. The rear panel feels sleek, but it doesn’t appear this one is completely immune to accidental drops. It hugs a similar display as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 – a 5.5-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and a high pixel density of slightly over 400 ppi. Your fear of scratches on the screen is allayed with protection by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Camera

The LeEco Le 2 rocks a 16-megapixel rear camera – same as you will find it on the rival Xiaomi phablet. But while it uses an Omnivision OV16880 sensor, the Redmi Note 3 comes with an ISOCELL sensor by Samsung. The handset boasts high dynamic range for great colour and contrast in images. It has a wide f/2.0 aperture lens like the other device and features dual-LED flash. In terms of video capturing capability, the Le 2 offers capability to shoot videos of up to 4K resolution. This one also seems to promise better selfies with a robust 8-megapixel front-facing camera having an f/2.2 aperture.

Hardware and Software

When it comes to performance, this beast promises something better than what the already-impressive Redmi Note 3 offers. It is equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor running at 1.8 GHz – an improvement over what both the LeEco Le 1s and the Xiaomi device pack. To help you better appreciate this CPU, LeEco says it is the most robust octa-core chip in the world. There is also a variant with a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 chipset. It is supported by 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 510 GPU. Internal storage capacity stands at 32 GB and is expandable using a microSD card. The phablet boots Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS with its maker’s EUI 5.6 skin on the surface.

Sundry Specs and Features

The LeEco Le 2 is accompanied by a 3,000mAh battery which, sadly, has lower capacity than the 4,050mAh juicer on the Redmi Note 3. LeEco has decided to do away with a 3.5mm audio jack on this one – its work is done by a reversible USB Type-C port with support for an innovative CDLA audio transmission technology. You will find a supposedly highly-accurate, scratch-resistant fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Pricing and Availability

This behemoth has not been released in Nigeria and the only way you can have one at this time is by buying online from China or India. The LeEco Le 2 is priced in a way you should be expecting to pay an amount in the range N35,000-N45,000 with the present state of currency exchange in the country. This effectively puts it in the same segment as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 which, for most, offers better value than the likes of the HTC Desire 626 Dual SIM and OnePlus X.

LeEco Le 2 Specs at a Glance

– All-metal design
– 5.5” Full HD IPS display
– 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras
– 1.8GHz, octa-core Snapdragon 652 CPU (or deca-core MediaTek Helio X20)
– 3GB RAM
– 32GB onboard storage with microSD support
– Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS
– 3,000mAh battery
– Fingerprint sensor

One major for this being so is not unconnected with its practice of making higher-end specifications available on its devices at cheaper prices – a recent example of this is the Redmi Note 3. This trend continues with the Chinese company’s latest flagship smartphone, Xiaomi Mi 5. In spite of being the firm’s most expensive phone yet, this device still comes in cheaper than several rivals.

Xiaomi Mi 5

Design and Display

Sporting a sleek design, the Mi 5 does not let itself down in terms of appearance. The body is made of 3D curved Corning Gorilla Glass 4 with an aluminium alloy frame sandwiched in-between. It flaunts a pleasantly svelte profile at 7.25 millimetres, while weighing only 129 grams. The display has a diagonal size of 5.15 inches. This ultra-bright touchscreen boasts an amazing Full HD (1,080p) resolution for awesome visuals. The Xiaomi Mi 5 comes with features to make for enjoyable reading or viewing in different settings.

Camera

What the Mi 5 offers in cameras are in no way disappointing either. On the rear, it rocks a robust 16-megapixel camera with 6-piece lens, f/2.0 aperture and rugged Sapphire glass lens cover. The shooter gets other flagship features such as 4-axis optical image stabilisation (OIS), phase detection autofocus, dual-tone LED flash and Auto HDR for awesome photography. This smartphone fits the bill if you are a frequent selfie taker. It packs a 4-megapixel front-facing snapper with an f/2.0 aperture, 80-degree wide angle lens, and 36 smart beauty profiles for superb selfies. The device shoots stunning 4K videos at 30 fps.

Hardware and Software

Armed with Qualcomm’s most powerful CPU yet, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is equipped for flagship-level performance. The sturdy Snapdragon 820 processor is paired with an Adreno 530 GPU which has been shown to be about 40 percent faster than Adreno 430 graphics solution. Expect apps and games to function smoothly on this one. It comes in different configurations as regards storage and RAM. The base model has 3GB RAM and 32GB onboard storage. The 64GB and 128GB models – available in China – come with 4 GB of RAM. Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 software, based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow, powers the phone.

Sundry Features

The Xiaomi Mi 5 is fitted with a fingerprint sensor that not only lets you unlock, but also perform several other functions. It can recognise up to five different fingerprint patterns. Juice is provided to the device by a 3,000mAh inbuilt Li-Po battery said to support more than 13 hours of continuous usage. Quick Charge 3.0 tech makes the juicer very fast to top up.

You get the future-focused USB Type-C port for charging and data. The phone offers 4G dual SIM support. There is Bluetooth 4.2, full-feature NFC and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with MU-MIMO and Wi-Fi Direct.

Pricing

With price starting at just over $400, the Mi 5 is almost 40 percent cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S7 base model offering significantly similar specifications. You are looking at a price in the range N100,000-N125,000 to get a unit. This phone competes very favourably with the new 4-inch Apple iPhone SE.

While this might not be the case here in Nigeria, the Xiaomi Redmi series is quite popular in some markets for making premium-like features available to users at pocket-friendly prices. The Redmi Note 3 is an example of great value this range offers, parading a spectacular Full HD display, a six-core processor, generous RAM, humongous battery and a fingerprint sensor, amongst other superlative features. It should not be confused with the 5-inch Redmi 3.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is an aesthetic device, defying its budget-friendly status. It flaunts an anodized, sandblasted metal body with a downy matte finish. You will love the fact that this one is not a fingerprint magnet. The build quality is solid and quite commendable. The handset crams in a huge 5.5-inch display with thin bezels and a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels for awesome visuals. It features diverse screen modes to make for comfortable viewing and impressive eye protection.

Camera

A look at what is on offer on the camera front reveals a combo of 16-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel selfie camera. The main camera on the back comes with a wide f/2.0 aperture and dual-tone dual-LED flash for awesome lowlight shots. It also boasts super-fast phase detection autofocus offering fast focusing capability comparable to that of DSLR shooters. You can use it to shoot 1080p videos. The front-facing camera also has an f/2.0 aperture and offers HD (720p) video recording.

Hardware and Software

On the inside, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 is equipped with a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor – the phablet is supposedly the first device to use this powerful chipset. There is also a model driven by a MediaTek chip. The device will come with either 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of onboard storage or 2 GB of RAM and 16GB of integrated storage – expansion is supported. The Adreno 510 GPU on show here is only a bit outdone by what you will find on some flagship smartphones. The Redmi Note 3 runs on Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 software, a highly customised version of Android Lollipop.

Sundry Specs and Features

Another highlight of the phablet is its massive 4,050mAh battery described as ‘ultra-thin and light’ by its Chinese manufacturer. The juicer is based on 690Wh/L high-density battery technology and is said to be able to offer standby time of up to 22 days. It supports Quick Charge feature.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 offers faster 4G LTE (Category 7) with VoLTE support. Connectivity options include USB OTG, Bluetooth 4.1 and dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac. It comes with a fingerprint sensor that supposedly gets it unlocked in just 0.3 seconds.

Pricing and Availability

It is unclear if the Redmi Note 3 is available in Nigeria at this time, but it is in India where the base model with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage sells for about Rs. 9,999. That price works out to a price in the range N30,000-N40,000, depending on what exchange rate you are using. When you consider what the phablet brings to the table, you may agree it is a steal at this price.

Chinese phone manufacturer Xiaomi is increasing building a reputation for itself as the poor man’s Apple with affordable devices that come with impressive features you’d ordinarily expect on more-expensive rival offerings. The company’s new invitingly-priced Redmi 3 looks to rival the amazing Lenovo Lemon 3 with some exciting features, including a humongous battery and an octa-core processor.

Xiaomi Redmi 3

GSMArena

Design and Display

Amazingly for a smartphone this affordable, the Xiaomi Redmi 3 parades an aluminium body. It measures 8.5 millimetres in thickness and 144 grams in weight, with the textured rear making for comfortable grip. The phone comes in gold, silver and grey colour variants. It sports a 5-inch IPS LCD display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels – outdone by the Full HD resolution offered by the Lemon 3. The screen should still deliver enjoyable wide-angle viewing nevertheless.

Camera and Storage

The Xiaomi Redmi 3 comes with a powerful 13-megapixel snapper on the rear. This camera with an f/2.0 aperture features LED flash and phase detection autofocus for spectacular shots, at least on paper. It can shoot Full HD (1080p) videos at 30 frames per second. There is a wide-angle 5-megapixel selfie camera, which is also capable of Full HD video recording. You get generous 16 GB of onboard storage memory, extendable by up to 128 GB via the microSD card slot.

Power and Performance

On the inside, the Xiaomi Redmi 3 packs an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor clocked at a speed of 1.5 GHz. Although the chip is a bit dated, it should still support better performance than what can usually be expected at this price point, especially when you consider the 2 GB of RAM on board. The smartphone boots Android 5.1 Lollipop software, with Xiaomi’s MIUI 7.0 skin on top. It will be accompanied by a jaw-dropping 4,100mAh Li-Ion battery that should get it running for many hours – this unit beats the 2,750mAh juicer on the Lenovo Lemon 3 out of the water.

Sundry Features

The Xiaomi Redmi 3 is a dual-SIM device, with one of its SIM slots doubling as a microSD card slot. You will be able to enjoy blazing-fast data connection speeds on this smartphone as it is 4G LTE-enabled. Connectivity features also include microUSB 2.0, Bluetooth 4.1 with A2DP, 3G and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot. GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS and BDS are all available for finding your bearing from place to place.

Pricing and Availability

This phone delivers great value as it is reportedly priced at 699 Yuan, same as the Lemon 3, putting the price in Nigeria in the range N21,000-N30,000 after conversion, depending on the source of exchange rate. But, as is common with Chinese companies when pushing out tantalizingly-priced devices, the Xiaomi Redmi 3 currently sells only in the Asian country, but it can be bought online.

Highlights

– Metal body
– 5-inch HD IPS display
– 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras
– 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 processor
– 2GB RAM
– 16GB onboard storage with 128GB microSD card support
– Android 5.1 Lollipop with MIUI 7.0
– 4,100mAh battery
– Dual SIM
– LTE

If wearable like the Fitbit Charge HR and Sony Smartband 2 fails to make as much splash as expected, it will probably be because of devices such as Xiaomi Mi Band. While it is true this cheap fitness band does not have a heart rate monitor and few other features the rival trackers have, it could do enough to sway those operating on very tight budgets.

Design

The look of the Xiaomi Mi Band is rather more minimalist, compared to that of the Charge or Smartband 2, but the build is practical. Its Chinese manufacturer says the fitness band, which features a slim aluminium alloy core surface, passed through a 12-step process to give it a sleek texture.

The wearable is both dust and water resistant, as indicated by its IP67 rating. It is built to withstand rugged use and a bit extreme conditions. Xiaomi says it can survive drop from a height of 1.2 metres on a marble surface and endure extreme temperatures (up 70 or -20 degrees) for up to 128 hours. Impressive! The fitness band has also undergone successful corrosion testing. It is made of soft TPSiV, one of the best thermoplastic elastomers in the world, to make it ideal for sensitive skin.

Xiaomi-Mi-Band

Tracking Capability

Xiaomi Mi Band promises similar tracking capability as some other fitness trackers you may have come across. It features a ‘military-grade’ exercise sensor made by the US company ADI and said to have the least power consumption among comparative sensors. The wearable tracks number of steps taken, distance covered and calories burned. With the aid of its three LED indicators, the Mi Band lets you have an idea of how well you are doing with regard to your daily fitness targets.

Like the Charge HR and Smartband 2, Xiaomi Mi Band automatically monitors your sleep – the length and quality. This way, you are able to determine whether you are indeed getting restful sleep and, if not, use available information to work on improvement. As you probably know, the quality of your sleep has something to do with the quality of your life. The tracker gives off a vibration to gently alert you to wake up 30 minutes prior to the alarm going off.

Awesome Battery Life

The Mi Band leaves many competing fitness bands, including the more expensive ones, in the dust in terms of battery life. Xiaomi promises 30-day battery runtime on one full charge. I’m sure that sounds like one of those exaggerated claims from manufacturers. It is appears to be a case of under-estimation, actually. Andy Boxall of Digital Trends says the battery actually lasts at least twice the runtime stated by the device manufacturer. If battery is an important consideration to you when buying a device, Xiaomi Mi Band should be somewhere around the top of the pile.

Sundry Information

You can sync the information gathered by the fitness tracker with the Mi Band app to save records for future reference with charts generated. Syncing is done via a low-power Bluetooth 4.0 chip. Xiaomi says you will able to save up to a full year’s worth of fitness data – this will allow you make comparisons over time.

Xiaomi Mi Band vibrates to notify you of incoming calls on your phone, ensuring you never miss a call again, unless you wish to. If you happen to misplace the fitness tracker, you can use its app to cause it to light up so long it’s within Bluetooth range.

Pricing and Availability

The Mi Band carries a price tag of just $15, which translates to a price of around N3,000 in Nigeria. You can see that it is indeed dirt-cheap since that price is just about a tenth of how much you will need to part with to get a Fitbit Charge HR or Smartband 2.
