With Android smartphones grabbing all the headlines, BlackBerry appears to be emerging out of its inertia to join the bandwagon. The Canadian company already has an Android smartphone – the Priv – in its portfolio, but the device didn’t make much splash, no thanks to its rather steep price.

BlackBerry looks ready for serious business this time with its new DTEK50. This smartphone, which may appeal more to business users, comes at a price point that places it in the middle-to-upper midrange segment. It boasts several of its maker’s security and productivity features.

BlackBerry DTEK50

Display and Camera

The BlackBerry DTEK50 had earlier been rumoured to be a rehash of the Alcatel Idol 4. Those speculations were right on the money. The two phones share a lot in common, including design, hardware and specifications. The device is built to deliver awesome visual experience. It rocks a 5.2-inch with Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels to make images come out sharp. You get a 13-megapixel rear shooter with phase detection autofocus and LED. There is also an ample 8-megapixel snapper with flash on the front for capturing quality selfies.

Hardware and Other Features

Armed with a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, the BlackBerry DTEK50 should deliver enjoyable, solid performance. This is further guaranteed in a way by RAM of 3GB capacity. Onboard storage is 16 GB – not much, but you can expand it using a microSD card. The smartphone boots a modified variant of Android 6.0 Marshmallow designed to guarantee better security. It offers similar software features as the BlackBerry Priv. Power needed to get the phone up and running is provided by a 2,610mAh unit.

‘Most Secure’ Android

BlackBerry boasts the DTEK50 is the most secured Android phone. It uses DTEK security software, which explains the choice of name. This protects you from malware and other security threats to which smartphone use may expose you. DTEK supposedly will help protect you against some threats you may not even be aware of. For example, it alerts you if there is any remote attempt to use certain features, such as camera or microphone, on the phone. You are also alerted if your location information is being retrieved.

Pricing and Availability

The BlackBerry DTEK50 is currently up for pre-order in select countries, including the US, the UK, Germany, France, and Spain. The price is $299 – you will spend nothing less than N100,000 to have this in Nigeria. The phone faces strong competition from China-made devices such as the Zuk Z1, Xiaomi Mi 5 and LeEco Le 2. However, it may fare better than the BlackBerry Priv whose initial $699 price tag was nothing short of prohibitive for many. Shipping starts August 8.
