LeEco and Coolpad are two of those Chinese companies noted for churning out great smartphones at affordable prices. When two of such companies come together, you would be right to expect nothing but super-awesome affordables. That is what we have here with the Cool1 Dual. This first effort from the collaboration between LeEco and Coolpad promises to awe buyers with features such as dual rear cameras, humongous juicer, and USB Type-C port. What exactly should you expect from this huge smartphone?

Cool1 Dual

Design and Display

The Cool1 Dual is a midrange smartphone. Based on this fact, you will not be wrong to figure this is another metal-clad device. Its body is fashioned out of magnesium alloy and comes in at a thickness of 8.2 millimetres. The Cool1 Dual sports a large 5.5-inch In-Plane Switching (IPS) display flaunting a Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. Expect better image clarity than you would get on other phones or even on some laptops.

Camera

What LeEco and Coolpad seemingly expect to draw buyers to this phablet is its camera setup. Take a look at the back of the device and you will notice a combo of two 13-megapixel cameras. Overkill? Maybe not. These dual rear cameras (which understandably informed name choice) are expected to function in the same way as those found on the high-end Huawei P9 series. One of the shooters is colour and the other monochrome. LeEco claims this setup will ensure 20% enhanced image clarity, improved brightness, and better noise reduction. The main shooter boasts dual-tone LED flash as well as HD slow-mo and 4K video recording capability.

In addition to the awesome rear camera setup, you will also find an impressive 8-megapixel selfie shooter on the front. The camera has an f/2.2 aperture lens with a wide 80-degree field of view.

Hardware and Software

On the inside, the Cool1 Dual houses an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset with four cores running at 1.8 GHz and the remaining four at 1.2 GHz. Solid performance appears right on the card for this enticingly-priced smartphone. Smooth gaming should be expected with an Adreno 510 graphics solution on board. It will be made available in three variants (in terms of RAM and storage): 3GB/32GB, 4GB/32GB, and 4GB/64GB. Sadly, it does not look like storage would be expandable. The phablet boots EUI 5.6 software based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Sundry Features

For power, buyers will be served by an impressive 4,060mAh battery with support for fast charging. You may love this one if you are the type that plays games, watches movies, or browses the net for hours on end. There is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner for extra layer of security. Among the connectivity features on the dual-SIM smartphone are Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and USB Type-C port. The Cool1 Dual also offers 4G LTE connectivity with VoLTE support.

Pricing and Availability

The base model of the phone will sell for an amount that converts to about $165, while the top-end model goes for around $255. The minimum amount you should expect for a unit is in the range N50,000-N65,000. There is no doubt the Cool1 Dual offers superb value at these prices. It falls in about the same category as the upper-end version of the new Xiaomi Redmi 3S. But it does enough to beat the other device, albeit at a slightly higher price. The phone will be available via select online outlets from August 24.

LeEco Le 2 is a follow-up to the hugely successful Le 1s (especially its Eco variant). Its maker appears interested in going head-to-head with fellow Chinese company Xiaomi, who holds the ace when it comes to affordable devices loaded with impressive features. This behemoth looks to rough it out with the amazing Redmi Note 3.

LeEco Le 2

BGR

Design and Display

Flaunting a unibody design and metallic construction, the 7.7mm-thick Le 2 no doubt looks premium. The build quality is impressive and one will not be wrong to say this will rival many higher-end smartphones. The rear panel feels sleek, but it doesn’t appear this one is completely immune to accidental drops. It hugs a similar display as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 – a 5.5-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and a high pixel density of slightly over 400 ppi. Your fear of scratches on the screen is allayed with protection by Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

Camera

The LeEco Le 2 rocks a 16-megapixel rear camera – same as you will find it on the rival Xiaomi phablet. But while it uses an Omnivision OV16880 sensor, the Redmi Note 3 comes with an ISOCELL sensor by Samsung. The handset boasts high dynamic range for great colour and contrast in images. It has a wide f/2.0 aperture lens like the other device and features dual-LED flash. In terms of video capturing capability, the Le 2 offers capability to shoot videos of up to 4K resolution. This one also seems to promise better selfies with a robust 8-megapixel front-facing camera having an f/2.2 aperture.

Hardware and Software

When it comes to performance, this beast promises something better than what the already-impressive Redmi Note 3 offers. It is equipped with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor running at 1.8 GHz – an improvement over what both the LeEco Le 1s and the Xiaomi device pack. To help you better appreciate this CPU, LeEco says it is the most robust octa-core chip in the world. There is also a variant with a 10-core MediaTek Helio X20 chipset. It is supported by 3 GB of RAM and an Adreno 510 GPU. Internal storage capacity stands at 32 GB and is expandable using a microSD card. The phablet boots Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS with its maker’s EUI 5.6 skin on the surface.

Sundry Specs and Features

The LeEco Le 2 is accompanied by a 3,000mAh battery which, sadly, has lower capacity than the 4,050mAh juicer on the Redmi Note 3. LeEco has decided to do away with a 3.5mm audio jack on this one – its work is done by a reversible USB Type-C port with support for an innovative CDLA audio transmission technology. You will find a supposedly highly-accurate, scratch-resistant fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Pricing and Availability

This behemoth has not been released in Nigeria and the only way you can have one at this time is by buying online from China or India. The LeEco Le 2 is priced in a way you should be expecting to pay an amount in the range N35,000-N45,000 with the present state of currency exchange in the country. This effectively puts it in the same segment as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 which, for most, offers better value than the likes of the HTC Desire 626 Dual SIM and OnePlus X.

LeEco Le 2 Specs at a Glance

– All-metal design
– 5.5” Full HD IPS display
– 16MP rear and 8MP front cameras
– 1.8GHz, octa-core Snapdragon 652 CPU (or deca-core MediaTek Helio X20)
– 3GB RAM
– 32GB onboard storage with microSD support
– Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS
– 3,000mAh battery
– Fingerprint sensor

That name ‘LeEco’ might not ring a bell; it is the new name of the Chinese phone maker previously known as LeTV. It is one of those tech companies that offer affordable devices loaded with some features you’d usually find on more-expensive rival offerings. Its new LeEco Le 1s is another of such impressive devices. This huge smartphone is built to contest against the likes of Lenovo Zuk Z1 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 in terms of value for money.

LeEco Le 1s

Design and Display

If you are looking for a smartphone sporting solid construction, the LeEco Le 1s is one of those worth checking out, particularly if you are not looking to spend a lot. It speaks premium with an all-metal body complemented by sturdy Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Although it is a behemoth, it measures just 7.9 mm and 169 g in thickness and weight respectively. This should be easy to handle.

As for the display, the Le 1s packs a huge 5.5-inch IPS LCD unit boasting a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. A pixel density of about 400 ppi makes for crystal clear visuals. The display technology ensures wide-angle viewing will be a pleasure.

Camera

The LeEco Le 1s is fitted with the sort of snappers you’d expect to find in this range for devices by manufacturers like LeEco these days. It rocks on the rear a 13-megapixel camera using Samsung’s ISOCELL sensor. The shooter features phase detection autofocus, LED flash and HDR for spectacular images. It can be used to record stunning 4K videos at 30 frames per second. The 5-megapixel front-facing camera should serve up some eye-catching selfies.

Hardware and Software

On the inside, the phablet is armed with a powerful 64-bit MediaTek MT6795 Helio X10 CPU. The octa-core processor zips along at an impressive speed of 2.2 GHz. It is supported by ample 3 GB of RAM. The presence of a PowerVR G6200 GPU onboard assures users of enjoyable gaming. Internal storage is generous at 32 GB, but this appears not to be expandable. The regular variant runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system, but a newer LeEco Le 1s Eco variant boots Android 6.0 Marshmallow software.

Sundry Features

The LeEco Le 1s is accompanied by a 3,000mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery rated to deliver almost 500 hours on standby for single SIM usage. The juicer supports Quick Charging so you do not have to spend forever getting it topped up. Both SIM card slots on the phablet supports lightning-fast 4G LTE connectivity. It has a fingerprint sensor for better security. There is Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac for speedy wireless connectivity. An IR Blaster feature lets you control certain electronic gadgets in the home by serving as a remote. The Le 1s boasts the reversible USB Type-C port with MHL 2.0 TV-out functionality.

Pricing and Availability

This handset has already gone on sales in countries such as India, where it sells for about Rs. 11,000. Officially, that price converts to about N33,000 in Nigeria. You will agree that is superb value for the features the LeEco Le 1s boasts of. However, it is not certain you can get this in Nigeria yet; you may have to import a unit. The exchange rate situation means you may have to pay about N45,000 to lay your hands on one – that is still a good deal, though.
