Sleek and Curvy: Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

In the next few weeks, mobile users in Nigeria and other parts of the world will be able to lay their hands on the latest pair of flagship devices from Samsung, one of which is the Galaxy S6 Edge. This new high-end smartphone – together with its regular variant Galaxy S6 – is set to put its Korean maker in a very good position in the smartphone market with eye-catching design and very cool features. As a matter of fact, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was named the best device unveiled at the recently-concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.

Design

Samsung has successfully relinquished the title of the only major manufacturer with a plastic flagship device. The Galaxy S6 Edge, just like the ordinary Galaxy S6, is covered in metal and top-quality glass. Top-notch craftsmanship was employed on this device and it is obvious enough to see in the final output. The smartphone features a unique curved screen with slopes on its two sides. The curves are much better than the one found on the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge – at least, in terms of the fact that they are less abrupt.

Screen and Camera

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge sports a 5.1-inch display, much like its predecessor, the Galaxy S6. The Super AMOLED display has an awesome resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels with 557ppi pixel density. Scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass protects the screen, which curves at both edges. Samsung provides a much-improved 16MP sensor with F1.9 lens, Dual LED and autofocus for the device’s main camera, which can be launched directly from the Home and responds very fast. Demonstration at the MWC 2015 showed this camera compares very well, even better, against Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus. If you are into selfies, you are in luck because the Samsung Galaxy S6 also has a 5MP front-facing camera.

Processor and OS

Somehow, Samsung decided to go with its own Exynos processor in place of the more-popular Qualcomm Snapdragon processor for the Galaxy S6, including the Edge variant. The integrated octa-core processor – comprising 2.1GHz quad-core and 1.5GHz quad-core – should be able to deliver good performance, though, supported by 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM. Comparison done by Phone Arena shows the smartphone performs creditably well against the iPhone 6. The device runs on the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop mobile operating system.

Sundry Specs and Features

This NFC-enabled smartphone comes with a battery of 2600mAh, which is slightly bigger than that on the Samsung Galaxy S6 regular. The Galaxy S6 Edge, like its brother, is available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB models, with no slot for memory card. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.1, Cat6 4G and Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2×2 MIMO). One of the cool features on the Samsung Galaxy Edge is Quick Contacts, which is a list of contacts with identifying colours at the screen’s edge. The list can be swipe in from the curved edge to make calls and appropriate colour is shown at the edge when one of the contacts calls.

The retail price of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is not yet known in Nigeria, but it is expected to range from N180,000 to N240,000, depending on the internal storage of the model you intend buying.
