What concessions would you be willing to make to get an affordable smartphone that is sprinkled with some high-end specifications and features, such as a metal body, an octa-core processor and a fingerprint scanner? How about having the device themed on a popular brand? If that sounds like a great idea, then you should check out the new Pepsi P1s – that is, if you are willing to order one from China at this time.
Design and Display
The phone, which is made for PepsiCo by the China-based Shenzhen Scooby Communication Equipment, showcases an attractive, premium unibody design with a body constructed using aluminium. The material used is a rarity in this price range. The Pepsi P1s, a version of which is known simply as the Pepsi P1, sports a large 5.5-inch diagonal display with a Full HD (1080p) resolution. Given its specification, the 2.5D touchscreen should offer users enjoyable viewing.
The Pepsi P1s packs a camera combo that is fast becoming the standard on most noteworthy upper mid-range smartphones. On the rear is a 13-megapixel shooter with an aperture size of f/2.0 holding promises of ability to churn out some spectacular images, at least on paper. The phone also has a 5-megapixel snapper on the front for selfies and video calling.
Hardware and Software
Under the hood, Pepsi P1s is armed with an octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor, which paces along at speeds of up to 1.7 GHz. It will be right to expect significantly responsive performance from the CPU, especially when you consider that it is accompanied by 2 GB of RAM. Internal storage memory on the Pepsi P1s is 16 GB and this can be expanded using a microSD card. It runs on a customised Dido OS 6.1, which is based on Android 5.1 Lollipop.
A battery with a capacity of 3000mAh – same size as the unit on the affordable but twice-expensive Samsung Galaxy J7 – powers the Pepsi P1s. Interestingly, the phone packs a fingerprint scanner on the rear for added security. It has dual SIM slots, with one of these doubling as a SIM and microSD slot.
Availability and Pricing
The Pepsi P1s has gone on sale in China at a price of CNY 699 (about $110), which means you should be looking at a price of between N22,000 and N25,000 to have one in Nigeria. It is even reported that there had been an early bird offer price of CNY 499, which is about N16,000 when price conversion is done using current official rate. This phone looks like great value for money. At this price, the Pepsi P1s outdoes the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime and compares very well against the impressive ZTE V3 Youth – both of which are also affordable devices.
