What device would you realistically expect to get for $189 (about N38,000 price in Nigeria) these days? Probably a low to medium-end smartphone or tablet, right? Well, you can get more. For that price, Chinese tech company Lenovo is willing to offer you a laptop running latest Windows 10 operating system in the form of the IdeaPad 100S.
Design and Display
The new Lenovo IdeaPad 100S, which was unveiled at the recent IFA 2015 in Berlin, parades an ultraportable design. It measures just 17.5 millimetres in thickness and only 1 kilogram in weight. The chassis is made of plastic, but still looks rather durable nevertheless. It comes with a keyboard that has basically all the essential keys for typing documents as well as a large, sleek touchpad. The small laptop features an 11.6-inch diagonal display with a standard resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.
Power and Performance
Lenovo IdeaPad 100S is armed with a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735F processor which delivers speeds of up to 1.33 GHz. The tablet-class CPU is supported by decent 2 GB of RAM, while graphics processing is handled by integrated Intel HD graphics. This configuration should support basic everyday tasks such as document typing and web browsing without any problems. But this one is in no way for power users. The IdeaPad 100S is equipped with a battery which Lenovo claims will provide up to 8 hours of use.
Sundry Specs and Features
One particularly interesting thing about Lenovo IdeaPad 100S is that it runs on the latest Windows 10 operating system, offering you impressive capabilities and a more powerful alternative to lightweight Chromebooks that usually go for this sort of price. Up to 32 GB of eMMC storage is provided for keeping your documents and other files. The integrated storage is quite measly, but you can complement that with an SD card and OneDrive cloud storage. Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11n are available for wireless connection.
Availability
The budget Lenovo IdeaPad 100S is expected to go on sale from October in the United States, but information on availability elsewhere is not yet available. The portable laptop has a larger 14-inch variant with better features and more power for a retail price of $259, equivalent to a little over N50,000 in Nigeria by the prevailing exchange rate at this time. There is also an IdeaPad 100S Chromebook that will sell for $179, which translate to around N35,600 – you’ll probably fare better adding a little more to get the Windows-running offering.
