Dell XPS 13 (2015) – A Slim Heavyweight

I know the title to this piece may sound contradictory, but I just can’t help it. The 2015 edition of the Dell XPS 13 is one of those notebooks that prove that ability to serve out robust performance is not determined by how big a laptop is. One of the best ultrabooks of the year, the XPS 13 (2015) shows off a very thin profile and comes with what Dell calls ‘the world’s first virtually borderless InfinityEdge display,’ while being equipped with a 5th-Gen Intel Core i Series processor and a long-lasting battery.

One of the highlights of the Dell XPS 13 (2015) is its slim and compact design. It is just 15mm thick and has a starting weight of just 2.6 pounds to make it easy to carry around when hitting the road. Its slim profile may be a source of concerns for some users, but there is really no need for that. The ultrabook boasts a solid, durable construction with a body made of aluminium and carbon fibre. It features a backlit, chiclet keyboard and a nice touchpad that supports accurate multi-touch gestures.

Dell XPS 13 (2015) packs in a stunning 13.3-inch InfinityEdge display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This edge-to-edge display also has a Quad HD+ (3200 x 1800 pixels) touch option, which puts the ultrabook in the same class as the highly-rated Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro in this regard. The screen has very thin bezels to offer you generous screen estate for viewing content. About 80 percent of the panel is covered by the display, more than in the case of the 13-inch Apple MacBook Air.

Under the hood, a fifth-generation Intel Core processor is provided to take care of all the heavy lifting on Dell XPS 13 (2015). Users have the option of a unit with a Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, offering speeds ranging from 2.1 GHz to 2.7 GHz or higher. Convincing performance is further ensured with standard 4 GB of RAM, upgradeable to 8 GB. Although graphics is handled by an integrated Intel HD Graphics 5500, graphics processing on the laptop has been compared to those of notebooks that come with discrete graphics cards.

Sundry Specs

Dell XPS 13 (2015) runs on the latest Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 upgradeable to Windows 10. Zippy solid-state drive of 128GB capacity is provided for storage. Ports and interfaces include two USB 3.0 ports with Powershare, a mini DisplayPort and a 3-in-1 card reader. The ultrabook is fitted with a 52WHr battery rated by its maker to deliver up to 15 hours of battery life. Bluetooth 4.0 and dual band Wi-Fi 802.11ac are provided for wireless connectivity.

Currently, Dell XPS 13 (2015) has a recommended starting price of $800, which equals about N160,000 in Nigeria at current exchange of N199. At that price, it is cheaper than the 13-inch MacBook Pro and even the similar-sized MacBook Air.
